WHAT IS 23?
23 is an opportunity for emerging and established artists working in the applied arts to exhibit their work within the context of a leading contemporary art gallery. The 23 initiative has developed in response to the lack of venues available to applied artists in and around Sydney. Sherman Galleries embraces artists working in all media and hopes this new endeavour will contribute to their recognition and success.

23 is a mobile exhibition space comprised of two perspex cubes on wheels. 23 may be positioned on the Sherman Galleries' back verandah, the terrace (level with the sculpture garden) or in the viewing gallery. If you are unfamiliar with these areas, please visit the gallery and have a look.

The perspex cubes rest upon plinths. Artists exhibiting in 23 will position their artwork(s) on the base and the perspex box will be placed over the top. There is a lock securing each box to its plinth so that the perspex covers cannot be removed once secured.

The public may view 23 during gallery hours: Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 11am-6pm.

23 aims to foreground the aesthetic, technical and conceptual nature of objects and to challenge past and present attitudes towards the applied arts. Additionally, 23 strives to offer an insight into the significance of these art forms now and in the future.
